On Monday 3 February the Very Rev John Conway, Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh, led the Daily Service on Radio 4 Extra. ‘Candlemas – Surrounded by goodness’ explored the theme of light, “that most ancient source of light and warmth, on which we all depend”, with music, a reading from Ecclesiastes, a reflection and prayers.

As Rev John explained at the start of the broadcast, Candlemas celebrates the time when the baby Jesus is brought to the temple by his parents Mary and Joseph. There he is recognised, greeted and acclaimed by Simeon and Anna as the light of the world.

The service’s reflection, on a reading from Ecclesiastes, went on to explore Simeon’s encounter with Jesus:

“The poet Dylan Thomas famously wrote: ‘Do not go gentle into that good night. Old age should burn and rave at close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.’ Simeon, however, who greets Christ at the temple, stands somewhat in contrast to that.

“He has waited long for this moment. When he takes the baby Jesus into his arms, and knows that the light has come, and that it is enough, rather than rage against the dying of the light he is released by knowing its presence with him in that moment.

“His famous words that greet the Christ-child are known as the Nunc Dimittis, sung every evening as part of the service of Evensong. As the light fails and candles are lit to illuminate the coming night, Simeon’s words ring out again:

“‘Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation
To be a light, to lighten
.’”

You can access a recording of the entire service, which lasts around 15 minutes, until the end of February at BBC Sounds.
