God as Nothing: Gilbert Markus

Gilbert Markus, the theologian and historian, will be coming to lead a talk and discussions on his new book, “God as Nothing”.
The book begins with the premise that in the bible, the opposite of faith was not atheism, but idolatry, and Gilbert explores the idols of the modern world, and the nature of God. If God created everything that exists, he cannot be one of the things that exists – so God’s nature is different from all other things that exists. In his book, he explores this way of looking at God’s nature through the history of the church, and seeks to show the implications this might have for us in our modern age.
Gilbert was twenty one years a Dominican friar, before he left for the world of academia. He is a specialist in the history of the early medieval “Celtic” world, and is currently researching the history of Iona.
Please join us for what will be a fascinating but accessible journey into the theology of many ages, including today.
The event will be held at the Trinity Centre.
