St Mark’s, Portobello
ABOUT THE CHURCH
St Mark’s, on Portobello High Street, dates back to 1826 and the building is striking, in that it resembles a villa of neo-classical design, set in its own grounds. The congregation has grown considerably in the past few years and numbers on average 50-60 per week. It comprises a broad age range, with a good number of families.
There are usually two services each week. The Sunday Eucharist is at 10.30am and follows the 1982 Scottish Liturgy. The service on Thursday, at 10am, uses the 1971 Prayer Book. The music reflects a blend of traditional and more modern, informal worship and, at the Sunday Eucharist, a mass setting is sung and hymns taken from the Complete Anglican Old and New. We have about 20 children who regularly attend Junior Church, meeting during the 10.30 Sunday service. Visitors are always welcome and details of special services and events can be found on our website.
