St Mark’s, Portobello

About the church
St Mark’s building is currently closed for renovation. We expect the building work to finish in April 2025. During the building works all our services and activities are happening as usual in different places around Portobello. Sunday Holy Communion (10.30am) is at St John’s Brighton Place and Wednesday Communion (2pm) is at Portobello and Joppa Parish Church. All details of changes to our services as a result of our temporary closure are on our website.
St Mark’s, on Portobello High Street, dates back to 1826 and the building is striking, in that it resembles a villa of neo-classical design, set in its own grounds. The congregation meets every day for Morning Prayer (Zoom), twice weekly for Holy Communion (in the church) and once a week for a Service of the Word (Zoom).
The Sunday Eucharist is at 10.30am and follows the 1982 Scottish Liturgy. The Wednesday communion service at 2pm, includes liturgies from around the Anglican Communion as well as from 1982. The music reflects a blend of traditional and more modern, informal worship and, at the Sunday Eucharist, different mass settings are sung for different liturgical seasons. We have a small youth group which meets with Portobello Baptist Church, and a group of younger children who meet for half days a few times a year for Bible, games and food. We have a number of different opportunities to explore faith in small discussion groups, social gatherings and in worship. Visitors are always welcome and details of special services and events can be found on our website.
