Workshop Event – “How to Care for Your Church”

25 September @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Free

A bit of background… St Mary’s Lochee formed a restoration steering group to work on raising funds to keep this church alive and for future generations.

This is an invite all those who care for historic places of worship to attend the Free workshop run by the Host (St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Lochee) and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).

The aim of the course is to offer those who care for historic places of worship (very often volunteers/priests/pastors) introductory guidance to understand their buildings better and to carry out basic preventative maintenance.

Topics covered by the course include:

  • An introduction to how traditional buildings were constructed, how they work and can decay, and how to spot and tackle common problems.
  • Understanding maintenance and why it is important.
  • Planning for the routine care of historic places of worship.
  • Working with professionals, contractors, and specialists.
  • Advice on keeping safe while undertaking maintenance on an historic place of worship.

The bulk of the course is delivered through illustrative presentations, with an opportunity for questions throughout the day. An observation exercise, looking at the host building to identify vulnerable areas of the fabric of the building and maintenance issues, is usually scheduled for the afternoon and the course concludes with an open discussion session.
