Mission and Ministry Committee

The vision of the Diocese of Edinburgh is that every congregation be a community where people find faith, grow in faith and share their faith. Our diocese is varied in its traditions, styles of worship and theological approaches. This richness enhances our life together and we have a history of working well together and supporting one another. We are committed to the mission of God, working to listen to the Spirit of God, and encouraging one another to respond to that call in joyful service.

What we do

The Diocesan Mission and Ministry Committee (DMMC) exists to help each congregation to grow in their mission and ministry under this vision. We help to resource congregations and clergy, enabling ongoing development and learning, and providing opportunities for people across the diocese to support and nurture each other in their faith journeys.

We have committed to shape our work by the Anglican Five Marks of Mission. These state that the mission of the Church is the mission of Christ:

  1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
  2. To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
  3. To respond to human need by loving service
  4. To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation
  5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth

We do this through distinct areas of expertise and discrete pieces of work. Through these, we prioritise:

  • clergy support and development
  • international links
  • lay learning and discipleship
  • support of the diocese’s children and young people, and those who minister amongst them.

How we work

The work of the committee is undertaken by smaller groups drawn from people around the diocese, who come together to enhance the life of the diocese for shorter periods of time.

Our work includes:

  • the practical – signposting to resources and sharing information
  • the investigative – discovering gifts of the people of the diocese and encouraging their contribution to the life of the diocese
  • the wider picture – as we link to the Province and the world-wide church.

Much of the work of the DMMC is undertaken by volunteers from across the diocese who are not members of the committee. This includes planning and delivery of the Big Day, support for vestries, and leadership at youth events.
